Fox and Wolf - Dragon History by ~AkimotoMichiyo:iconAkimotoMichiyo:

The world was originally a warzone between gods, elementals and arcanic creatures to rule.  The Ancients, the gods who originally lived on the planet, were in the war as well.  They were mostly a wild and vicious type of god and when the war was over, some hide and some survived.  In the end the three main gods of the story proclaimed themselves as joint rulers of the land along with other elementals and Ancients joining them.  As for the arcanic creatures, they fled to another plane and are occastionally summoned by mages.

So, the first creatures the gods created were the dragons.  With advice from the Ancients on their design, they created 3 different types of dragons and a dragon council of sorts to rule over them.

First, the elementals who served under the gods gave the dragons their elements.  Each dragon is generally a different element (ex: Common fire dragon, Greater Wind Wyvren) which can generally be determined by the type of element they breathe out.

The first dragons created were called the Eldar and were all created at the same time.  There was Lord Varlkormius of the Flame, Lord Thoranalor of the Shock, Lady Serena of the Waves, Lord Grungalan of the Rock, Lady Lacranne of the Leaves, Lady Calium of the Clouds and Lady Hilenn of the Frost.  They were the first and, perhaps, the last demigods created on the planet.  They had the ability to tap into and use the powers of magic and their own element freely and with expertise.  They each lead they own respective dragons, continued again.

The next dragons to be created were the Thyme dragons.  They were dragons of magic and could control magic very powerfully, and had a relatively good control over the elements but could not match the might of the Eldar.  When one Eldar passes away or dissapears, generally one of the Thyme dragons who is an expert on the type of element they use takes their place (only ever happened twice).  They are much more intelligent than humans or elves and were the first sentient race on the planet.

The next dragons were called the Gretar dragons.  They each have an element and are a little smarter than the average human and about as smart as elves.  While they can control their elements with expertise, they cannot control the magic.  Since the magic in this world is not from the creature but from around it (more accuratly "streams" of magic in different places) to conduct it, one must use their own body to channel the magic.  Gretar dragons can only do this when in desperate need and even then they cannot control it well.

The gods also gave the dragons a gift:  Dragon stones.  More common in thyme dragons then gretar (and always existant in the Eldar), these stones develop over time in the dragons belly.  They slowly absorb the some of the magic that is channeled into the dragon when casting spells or using magic in general.  The more magic used, the larger the stone grows.  Over time the stone grows very large and the dragons pretty much barf it up like a hairball.  These stones contain tons of magic which was used in building the first dragon capital, Lumune-Shralaka.  They were highly prized by human mages whom hunted down the thyme dragons almost to extinction.

Finally, the gods told the dragons that they had no need to eat.  They told them that they absorbed the magic from the magic streams and the elements from the earth so they needed nothing to nourish themselves.  The gods told them they could eat plants, if they replaced them afterwards but NEVER meat.  The dragons did not question this at all.

Ok, so moving ahead on some history about them.  The dragon Eldar Thoranalor was, perhaps, the wisest dragon in the Eldar.  Second after him was Valkormius who admired him and his work.  Anyway, the dragons lived peaceful lives for about 10,000 years or so until one of the Gretar dragons began to notice something with the creatures.  He began to notice that, when animals ate meat, they grew stronger.  Forgetting the rules, the dragon went out and hunted down an animal and ate it.

He did change, the dragon.  Just not for the better as he had hoped.  Yes, he became stronger and much larger than before.  However, his mind deteriorated to that of a beast and he lost the ties to the elemental and magical powers he could once use.  No longer able to gather nurishment either, the dragon now HAD to eat meat to survive.  He became known as the first of the Sang-fallorn, or the Blood Fallen.  The humans call them Lesser Dragons.

When the dragons heard of this, many tried to cure then dragon.  But nothing worked, and the once mighty dragons mind was lost.  And, the once golden age of the dragons (referred to as Lumun-galorei, or Light Blessed) ended and the new age called the Fallorn-Alaka (Fallen Kin) began.  This was a time of constant fear of the blood sin, as it had been called.  No dragon ate in fear of getting it, but even dragons who ate fruit seemed to discover that, by some foul means, meat was in there mouths.  And by this the dragons began to fall.

In an attempt to stop this, the Dragons stormed and banished the Lesser dragons to the lands on the other side of the planet.  Eldar Valkormius, passionate and very sad about his kin leaving, decided to go with them along with a couple of Gretar dragons and Thyme dragons to watch over them and see if the other side of the world held a cure.

Around this time was when the elves first entered the world on the other side in the Southern Lands.  They fought with the Ancient-made Orcs for thier homes and eventually traveled across the sea to the northern lands (where they live in the Elven Woods to this day).  That, however, is another story.

After Valkormius left, Eldar Lady Hilenn was terrified of more and more of her thyme dragons turning.  She decided to take matters into her own hands and left to the north of the planet, on it's pole, with most of the thyme dragons left un-bloodied.  Huge mountains reared up before them, freezing winds battered them but Hilenn lead her dragons north until they reached the end of the nearly endless mountain chain.  The flight path took a week to fly over the mountains with Hilenn's help most of the way, so she was happy that this land would be safe.

Instead of the land being cold in the north, it was surprisingly pleasent like spring with rich green grass.  And, because of the location on the pole, the two moons (the large pink one and the small blue one, sorry no names yet) crossed with the Advisor (a single red star normally found in between the two moons) below them.  In the middle of the Hilenn Valley (as it is called, although it legends it is name the "Valley of the Thyme Dragons) was a giant lake that was completely circular (well almost) and was very very calm.  When the dragons looked down, they could see the reflection of all the stars perfectly in it.  The area surrounding the lake was very green with purple flowers dotting the area like stars.  They named the lake Stella dal Larimma, which roughly means "Mirror of the Stars".

The biggest surprise was at the end of the lake, however.  There, on a small grassy hillock overlooking the lake was a large stone and wood doorway.  Standing in front of it with a hammer by his side was the fire phoenix god (again, no name, sorry!) in human form as a tall, muscular man dressed in armor with a mask on and a sword through his head.  He explained to them the coming of humans and the door to the other worlds, and asked one of the thyme dragons to take the hammer to protect them from otherworldy beings.

No one stepped up for the challenge for a while, until suddenly the purple dragon known as Vyergal stepped forward and volunteered to take the job when no one else would.  He took up the hammer from the god and it's gold markings glowed on the handle, marking him as Keeper Vyergal of the gate.

So, the dragons set up a small village across the lake and, soon enough, the humans came.  Vyergal welcomed them to the land and they stayed a night in the village but, in the morning, the Thyme dragons used their powers to teleport the humans each to different places across the northern kingdom on the other side of the world where Varlkormius went.

Now, Hilenn knew that the humans ate meat and had a vision of troubles.  Sure enough, only about 600 years or so of the human civilizations and they were already killing the thyme dragons for their dragon stones.  Some of the Thyme dragons, terrified of getting killed but still wanting to explore the world, used their magic to create a human form.  No simple allusion, the human form kept the thyme dragons safe and allowed them to live normally in human and elven society.  The rest of the thyme dragons fled to the north to the land of lady Hilenn, now called Shathla Valleu, or "Safe Valley"/"Safe Haven".

Then, lady Hilenn did something that had never been done before.  On the less-lengthier chain of the mountains near the human kingdom of Nevialla, she began her barrier.  With 2 of her dragonstones and her magic she froze herself in ice and conquered a massize, never-ending blizzard with frigid cold temperatures to prevent anyone from reaching her paradise anymore.  Her creation is known as the ice mountains in Nevialla and no mortal has ever gone over them.

Perhaps inspired by that idea, on the other end of the world the lady Lacranne decided to try something like that to keep the dragons safe.  She used her power, along with some of Varlkormius', to turn herself into the Emerald Flame.  The Flame sits on the top of a stone tower (almost like a lighthouse) at the beginning of the dragon's kingdom (as it was by the ocean).  Using her powers, any meat brought into dragon territory anywhere would be burned.

This worked for a great long time and for nearly 5000 years the dragons had peace again.  However, disaster struck with Eldar Thoranalor.  He left the safety of his home for a little while to study plants and ate a small apple.  However, inside the apple was a small peice of meat.  And so the Eldar fell.

Lady Serena created a barrier and sealed Thoranalor into a great underground chamber where he lives, madenned and crazed.  His kind, the Gretar thunder dragons, began to change into The fallen.  The remaining sane thunder dragons, terrified, turned themselves into crystal using their magic and became the Crystal dragons.  Some remained still as statues forever while some choose to move and live forever in sorrow of their fallen leader.

That was the last straw on the last remaining dragons. Lord Grungalan of the Rock, Lady Calium of the Clouds and Lady Serena of the Waves met with a mission to find the cure for Thoranalor.

Lord Grungalan decided to seek deep within the earth to find what he sought, but before he went he created the great crystal tree for the crystal dragons to live on.  They were enternally thankful for his parting gift, and Grungalan was never seen again after that but presumed alive as the crystal tree continues to flourish.

Lady Calium sought answers above the earth and flew high into the clouds, perhaps above the atmosphere.  Ever 1000 years or so she returns with news on her research to Varlkormius as he was the smartest dragon next to Eldar Thoranalor.

Lady Serena of the Waves sought for her answer in the deep water systems of the earth.  Of course, before she went she gave her dragonstone to the merfolk of the southern sea.  They put it on the top of their underwater castle forever as a reminder of the water demi-god.  She was never seen again, and her dragonstone slowly leaks it's magical energies away on the top of the merfolks castle.

Now all that remains of the mighty Eldar are Lord Valkormius in the Draconic Flamelands and the spirit of Lady Lacranne who governs over the dragons capital city at the other end of the world.  The earth, sky, plant/leave, crystal and water dragons live in that city along with the thyme dragons, although most live in Hileen's Valley.  The fire dragons remain with Lord Valkormius along with the Lesser dragons whom he tries to cure.  The replacement to take over Lord Thoranalor was never found by the dragons, although she is expected to be found in the ocean or water as Lady Lacranne's spirit had a vision of a great and powerful wise she dragon sleeping in the water.

The end...for now, as the Fox and Wolf takes place during this time, when the humans have a firm hold on their earth.

Author's Comments

Posted this on my livejournal too. I had to get this down.

More will be added, I know what happens next but I'm not spoiling anyone. I know it's rough but it's good enough. I might polish it up and re-release it as a better version of stories.

Picture is Keeper Vyergal, the purple dragon with the green eyes and the hammer of the gods. I did a quick doodle on MS paint (oh boy) because I was too lazy to scan in a better picture.

I'll scan in a bunch of stuff tomorrow, okay?
